The Crown of Excellence : Chapter 12 : § 8.1-9

Chapter 12 : The Eleventh Star or Splendour of the Crown of Excellence of the Mother of God

Continuing our translation of the 1845 reprint of Fr François Poiré's Triple Crown of the Mother of God (1643 French edition).

Notre Dame des Grâces, Cotignac.(Poggi, 2020)
She has been and is still recognized and called blessed by all generations in the world

§ 8. How she has been recognised and honoured in every way possible

1   There are many other things to be said, but in order to avoid extending this discussion unduly I think it would be better now to summarise the admirable ways in which Almighty God has made possible all manner of means whereby the honour and merit of His Holy Mother could be raised higher, especially through favours granted to her servants and her friends. The love of Christian peoples has shown itself to be so faithful and constant in this respect that we can only thank and bless the one who has inspired such warm devotion and stir ourselves into following their example in the way we honour her. I do not intend to delve deeply here into the details of the particular ways God has made it possible for His Church to increase the glory of Our Lady, for I think that there will be opportunities to cover these in the pages that follow. It will be enough for now to highlight the main points which can be expanded upon later. I have no intention in this section of repeating what has already been said nor of touching on matters which have been dealt with throughout this chapter.

Miracles performed for the Holy Virgin

2   The multitudes of miracles which God has performed for His most holy Mother are proof of the great care that He has taken over her honour. There is no country in the universe – in fact there is no province, no city, no town and not even any little hamlet – where God has not performed some miracle in respect of the glorious Virgin. From the time that she was raised to the degree of honour that she now has, no century has passed – in fact not a single day has passed – when she has not given us some sign of her unparalleled goodness and (on rare occasions when it proved necessary) of her ability to be strict. There are numerous books full of famous examples showing the power of the MOTHER OF GOD and Heaven’s own Chronicles have preserved a faithful record which includes others unknown to us and which have never been written down on earth. I hope that in the following discussions and in subsequent Parts of this work I shall find frequent opportunities to recount some of the miracles which have been set down in writing for the consolation and edification of posterity.

Her relics were sought out and preserved with devotion

3   God has inspired zeal in Emperors and Monarchs, as well as in whole provinces and other great communities, to seek out with fervour and great care any objects they could find relating to the Holy Virgin’s time here on earth, to preserve them in reliquaries made of exquisite materials, to build magnificent and sumptuous Churches to house them, and to attract people from every corner of Christendom to come and honour them in a way they deserve. Is not all this proof of His great love?

The fame of Our Lady’s Feasts

4   God has commemorated the mysteries of this Lady’s life with solemn Feasts which were introduced to keep these memories alive amongst all her people. These Feasts are celebrated with as much joy, pomp and magnificence as His own. Does all this not show His most cordial love ?

Images of the Holy Virgin

5   What miracles has God not failed to perform through these images of the glorious Virgin? What graces and blessings has he not failed to bestow on those who kneel before them? What has He not done to ensure that whichever way we turn we always have before our eyes an image of her alone whose memory and love He wishes to engrave in the depths of our hearts?

The prayers and the Offices of the Virgin

6   How many different prayers and Offices has He not provided through His Church for the faithful from the very beginning, enabling us to greet His blessed Mother and convey our thoughts to her throughout all the hours of the day?

Liturgical and other public prayer

7   Consider the part God has given to His Holy Mother in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in public and private Orations, in the administration of the Sacraments, in the taking of vows, in pilgrimages and in the most noble ceremonies in the whole economy of the Christian Religion. Apart from all this, does she not also receive her own tribute, namely in the Divine Office, which is directed and dedicated especially to her for more than a sixth part of the yearly cycle?

Associations, Congregations, Confraternities, Octaves, Books, etc.

8   How many Associations, Confraternities and Congregations have been established in all the cities of Christendom for the promotion of service to her and the increase of her glory? How many Octaves have been introduced for the public offering of praises to her? How many hearts are united in her and in love for her, wanting to make her known and loved, were it possible, by the whole world? How many writings are published and new discoveries made almost every day about her?

God’s will is always to honour His Mother

9   There is not much more for me to say since it seems that God is ever mindful to ensure this Lady is honoured in every way possible and to send in her direction those who would otherwise have His Majesty to deal with. His will is for all to pass through her hands. He trusts her in everything she does and gives her all power and authority in His Kingdom, disposing of nothing Himself without the knowledge and agreement of her through whose hands He wills all should pass. This means that she can do everything she wishes and arrange things in the way that appears best to her, on earth as in Heaven.

That will have to be enough for now, and the little I have written must serve to give you an idea of what I aim to discuss more fully in the Chapters to follow.
