The following three prayers each reflect the idea of 'septiformis munere',each being divided into seven stanzas or sections.

Veni Creator Spiritus


The Latin hymn is attributed to Blessed Maurus Magnentius Rabanus, Abbot of Fulda, Archbishop of Mainz, a celebrated theological and pedagogical writer of the ninth century, born at Mainz about 776 (784?); died at Winkel (Vinicellum) near Mainz on 4 February, 856.

The first English translation is courtesy of Fr Adrian Fortescue (1874-1923), a remarkable English Roman Catholic priest who was an influential liturgist, artist, calligrapher, composer, polyglot, amateur photographer, Byzantine scholar, and adventurer. He was the founder of the Church of St Hugh of Lincoln in Letchworth.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus



Veni, Sancte Spiritus (“Come Holy Ghost”), known as the Golden Sequence, is the sequence for the Mass for Pentecost. It is commonly regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of sacred Latin poetry ever written. Its beauty and depth have been praised by many. The hymn has been attributed to three different authors, King Robert II the Pious of France (970-1031), Pope Innocent III (1161-1216), and Stephen Langton (+1228), Archbishop of Canterbury, of which the last is most likely the author.

This hymn became part of the Roman Missal used for Mass in the 16th century.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
et emitte caelitus
lucis tuae radium.

Come, O Holy Spirit, come!
From your bright and blissful Home
Rays of healing light impart.

Litaniae Lauretanae: with notes

The Litany contains many praises found in a Hymn which was first translated into Latin around the year 800. The other titles and praises are found in the writings of the early Church Fathers of the first six centuries. It is believerd the Litany was composed in Paris towards thre end of the 12th century. It gets its name from the Italian shrine at Loreto where it was adopted in 1558.

Sedes sapientiae,
Proverbs, Cap IX: Wisdom invites all to her feast. Folly calls another way. [1] Sapientia aedificavit sibi domum : excidit columnas septem. [1] Wisdom hath built herself a house, she hath hewn her out seven pillars. Why does the Blessed Virgin Mary bear the title sedes sapientiae (seat of wisdom)? There are two reasons.

(1) Saint Paul identifies Christ as the 'wisdom of God'.

[21] Nam quia in Dei sapientia non cognovit mundus per sapientiam Deum : placuit Deo per stultitiam praedicationis salvos facere credentes. [22] Quoniam et Judaei signa petunt, et Graeci sapientiam quaerunt : [23] nos autem praedicamus Christum crucifixum : Judaeis quidem scandalum, gentibus autem stultitiam, [24] ipsis autem vocatis Judaeis, atque Graecis Christum Dei virtutem, et Dei sapientia :

[21] For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world, by wisdom, knew not God, it pleased God, by the foolishness of our preaching, to save them that believe. [22] For both the Jews require signs, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: [23] But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews indeed a stumblingblock, and unto the Gentiles foolishness: [24] But unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.... Christ fulfills the Old Testament tradition of the primordial Wisdom of the Lord. St. John identified Christ as the Divine Word or Logos of God (John 1:1-13). As Wisdom Incarnate, Christ is seated on the lap of His Blessed Mother. Mary is the throne from which Christ rules the universe.

(2) Secondly, our Lady is the seat of wisdom relatively as the human fulfillment of 'Lady Wisdom' presented in the Book of Proverbs and especially in Proverbs 31 as the ideal wife and mother.

Because she is the mother of Wisdom (Jesus Christ), she participates in wisdom preeminently. She is Lady Wisdom by virtue of her role as Theotokos.

In conclusion, Christ is wisdom absolutely and so Mary is the “Seat of Wisdom” because she bore Christ in her womb and upon her lap. Mary is wisdom relatively in that she is personificaltion Lady Wisdom in the tradition of the Book of Proverbs. Acknowledgements to Dr Taylor Marshall.
