Chapter 5 : The Fourth Star or Splendour of the Crown of Excellence of the Mother of God

§ 4. The incomparable graces that the Holy Ghost released to His Bride in preparation for their Nuptials


Mary was filled with sweetness

 5   What do want me to say concerning the profusion of interior joy and the abundance of heavenly sweetness that Mary experienced:

 – at the arrival of the Holy Ghost, the divine source of all sweetness and all true joy; 
 – at the conception of the divine Word miraculously becoming incarnate in her womb; 
 – at sharing in the Eternal Father’s joy in the accomplishment of this mystery?

St Augustine[1] states that Mary's experience was such that she was transported out of herself in a way that made her altogether incapable of explaining what happened. We have in fact reached the stage where many Doctors[2] have no difficulty in saying that at this point of eternal happiness for her she was borne aloft on the wings of high contemplation and was granted the privilege of seeing the divine essence unveiled. On this subject, however, I shall have more to say at a more suitable time. It should be noted however, that it is not for us to trespass unduly into the graces and signs of affection bestowed upon this Holy Lady in consideration of her Nuptials.

 6   Be that as it may, O glorious Virgin, I am nevertheless confident that thou wilt accept the feelings of public rejoicing that we offer thee from the depths of our being. We say this for we have even more reason than Rebecca’s brothers who said to their estimable sister: Thou art our sister, mayst thou increase to thousands of thousands, and may thy seed possess the gates of their enemies.[3]  Thine ancestor David warned thee to forget thy people and thy father's house,[4] since thou hast the honour of entering a union beyond thy dreams and which hath lifted thee above us in ways beyond thine understanding. Despite all this, it is particularly important for us that thou dost not look down upon us now that thou hast power to make us obliged to thee. It was never part of the kind-hearted King’s plans to give thee a heart with no pity for us on earth; rather, His will was only to increase thy courage and to make thee realize that henceforth thou must no longer take thy glory from earth since thou hast the honour of being in a Heavenly union.
