The Vladimirskaya Icon. >12th century.
I have for some time been closing my posts with a triple seal:
* the beautiful icon of the Holy Mother of God known to many as the Vladimirskaya Icon;
* the Sub tuum præsidium, said to be the oldest prayer to Our Lady; and
* a short prayer of consecration to the Immaculate heart of Mary.
Over the coming weeks, I shall include a short commentary on one or other of these prayers, (recalling that holy icons are traditionally said to be written like prayers rather than painted).
The Vladimirskaya Icon : Bride of Christ
Her innocence, her comportment and her humility have attracted the attention of the Sovereign King and have rendered her a Spouse worthy of so great a Prince. The more she receives caresses, the more she renders Him honour and homage. The glory and majesty that her Spouse transmits to her are such that the Princes and Kings of the earth, the great ones, are pleased if they receive one kindly glance from her. They fervently desire to be one of her suite and to be numbered among her servants. Through her mediation, this would give them access to the wondrous graces of her Spouse. The beauty and glory of this magnificent Bride, of this daughter of the high King, does not consist so much in her appearance since her most striking beauty is within her, for her heart of ardent love and her saintliness dazzle like purest gold. She is, moreover, clad in cloth of gold embroidered with sundry colours; these represent all the graces and virtues in which she abounds, as well as the different states with which she is honoured. Her suite is a million virgins who have taken a vow of perpetual chastity, all wearing the habit of those consecrated to their Mistress. They wait to be presented to her Spouse and to take up their joyous and happy abode in His Temple or royal Palace. Lest any delight be wanting in this sacred marriage, in place of the ancient Patriarchs it will bring forth fine children whom the Mother will set up as Princes over all the earth. Firstly, she will fill the Church Militant with these Princes her on earth and then later the Church Triumphant in heaven. All of these together will forever preach and sing of the greatness and magnificence of the Spouse and His bride; and all peoples will render them homage and thanks for ever and ever.
Prayer
My dear Spouse, thou art altogether beautiful and in every way pleasing. Thy dove-like eyes are faithful witnesses to the purity and beauty that dwells in thy soul. The holy feelings of thy tender heart are like the beautiful sheepskins of the flocks who come down from Mount Galaad; they are so well arranged and dressed for the pleasure of thy Spouse who takes great delight in contemplating them. The desires of thy heart are like thy teeth for they are so pure, so innocent and so fruitful in good works. They recall sheep freshly shorn and leaping from being washed in their dip, with their little lambs on either side. Thy words are like incarnadine tresses flowing from thy lips, so gracious are they when they emerge from thy mouth. Modesty and purity are on thy cheeks, so as to resemble two halves of a pomegranate. Thy virtue stands out in its manifold perfections and is noticeable from afar like the Tower of David, whose ramparts protect it on every side, without mentioning the arsenal inside with its store of weapons and armour. Fruitfulness and virginity are found together in thee alone; they are signified by thy two breasts. They are like two little roe deer that graze amidst the lilies and the sweetest flowers of the fields. In the end, what more couldst thou wish for me to say to thee? I confess that thou altogether beautiful and perfectly to my liking. Among the daughters of Jerusalem, there is non like unto thee.[Cf. Cant. iv. 1-5]

Oraison à Jésus (de Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort)
St. Louis De Montfort's Prayer to Jesus
O most loving Jesus, deign to let me pour forth my gratitude before Thee, for the grace Thou hast bestowed upon me in giving me to Thy holy Mother through the devotion of Holy Bondage, that she may be my advocate in the presence of Thy majesty and my support in my extreme misery.
⮚ nécessaire pour vous calmer dans votre juste colère, puisque je vous ai tant offensé tous les jours;
⮚ nécessaire pour arrêter les châtiments éternels de votre justice que je mérite;
⮚ nécessaire pour vous regarder, pour vous parler, vous prier, vous approcher et vous plaire;
⮚ nécessaire pour sauver mon âme et celle des autres;
Alas, O Lord! I am so wretched that without this dear Mother I should be certainly lost. Yes, Mary is necessary for me at Thy side and everywhere: that she may appease Thy just wrath, because I have so often offended Thee; that she may save me from the eternal punishment of Thy justice, which I deserve; that she may contemplate Thee, speak to Thee, pray to Thee, approach Thee and please Thee; that she may help me to save my soul and the souls of others; in short, Mary is necessary for me that I may always do Thy holy will and seek Thy greater glory in all things.
Ah, would that I could proclaim throughout the whole world the mercy that Thou hast shown to me! Would that everyone might know I should be already damned, were it not for Mary! Would that I might offer worthy thanksgiving for so great a blessing! Mary is in me. Oh, what a treasure! Oh, what a consolation! And shall I not be entirely hers'? Oh, what ingratitude! My dear Saviour, send me death rather than such a calamity, for I would rather die than live without belonging entirely to Mary.
With St. John the Evangelist at the foot of the Cross, I have taken her a thousand times for my own and as many times have given myself to her; but if I have not yet done it as Thou, dear Jesus, dost wish, I now renew this offering as Thou dost desire me to renew it. And if Thou seest in my soul or my body anything that does not belong to this august princess, I pray Thee to take it and cast it far from me, for whatever in me does not belong to Mary is unworthy of Thee.
O Holy Spirit, grant me all these graces. Plant in my soul the Tree of true Life, which is Mary; cultivate it and tend it so that it may grow and blossom and bring forth the fruit of life in abundance.
O Holy Spirit, give me great devotion to Mary, Thy faithful spouse; give me great confidence in her maternal heart and an abiding refuge in her mercy, so that by her Thou mayest truly form in me Jesus Christ, great and mighty, unto the fullness of His perfect age. Amen.

O Jesus Living in Mary
Amen.
O Jesus living in Mary,
Come and live in Thy servants,
In the spirit of Thy holiness,
In the fullness of Thy might,
In the perfection of Thy ways,
In the truth of Thy virtues,
In the communion of Thy mysteries;
Subdue within us every hostile power,
The world, the Devil and the flesh,
In power of Thy spirit, for the glory of thy Father. Amen.

The only grace I beg thee to obtain for me is that every day and every moment of my life I may say:
⮚ Ainsi soit-il, à tout ce que vous avez fait sur la terre, lorsque vous y viviez;
⮚ Ainsi soit-il, à tout ce que vous faites à présent dans le ciel;
Amen, to all that thou hast done while on earth; Amen, to all that thou art now doing in Heaven; Amen, to all that thou art doing in my soul, so that thou alone mayest fully glorify Jesus in me for time and eternity. Amen.
SUB tuum præsidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genitrix. Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. Amen.
WE fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers always Glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
