Part II : The Crown of Power : Chapter 6 : § 7. 4-5

Chapter 6 :  The Fifth Star or Splendour of the Crown of Power of the MOTHER OF GOD

She is the Mother of the world to come and Redeemer of our race

Continuing our translation of the 1845 reprint of Fr François Poiré's Triple Crown of the Mother of God (1643 French edition).

§ 7. Reconciliation with God : the first fruit of mankind’s restoration by the Blessed Virgin

The rainbow : symbol of our reconciliation

4   The time has come to leave, oh ye beautiful souls, the time has come to leave your grimy hovels and ascend in the spirit to Heaven, or at least to the region of the air[1]. There you will see a beautiful rainbow bringing joy to your gaze and in it all of you will see a perfect image of the Princess of peace of whom I am speaking to you. It was St Bonaventure who drew my attention to this and the holy Virgin also spoke about it to St Bridget.

For if the rainbow is the son of the Sun and a miracle, the MOTHER OF GOD is likewise the daughter of the Sun of justice and of grace, which is the outstanding miracle of the world. If the rainbow is resplendent with a thousand beautiful colours, then she dazzles with a thousand different sorts of virtues. There you will see the white of her virginity, the purple of her charity, the blue of her devotion, the orange of her compassion, the green of her hope; in short, she is surrounded with the variety of virtues which she possesses, as the Prophet David says[2]. If the physical rainbow is between Heaven and Earth which it embraces with both arms, then the blessed Virgin’s rainbow is between God and men, whose part she takes and towards whom she reaches down so as to give them every sort of confidence and to mediate their reconciliation more freely. If the physical rainbow is an infallible sign of the peace which God made with men and a promise assuring us that we shall never again be flooded with the waters of God’s anger and indignation, then the blessed Virgin’s rainbow is a most sure portent of our restoration which all the powers of Hell will be unable to prevent, now that she has applied her steadying hand.

How I pray that God might grant me the means to explain the idea to all who are interested in this peace, and to convey to their ears and to their hearts the sweet words of Ecclesiasticus[3]: Look upon and wonder at this beautiful rainbow and bless him that made it.  It is pleasing to the eye and wondrously glorious, It adorns the heavens like an embroidered baldric[4], studded with precious stones, and the hands of the omnipotent Have shaped it.

Take the time to contemplate this physical wonder of the heavens, the splendour and variety of its colours, and how closely it is linked to its father the Sun; now meditate attentively upon all the perfections of this Lady, and be sure to understand that if the world enjoys any peace and serenity and if it has any hope of salvation, then it owes these after God to her who is for us a unique sign of peace and friendship.

[1] Heaven & the region of the airThe  commentary in the Fillion Bible (1888-1895) on II Cor. xii. 2 (...one caught up to the third heaven) states that the Bible refers to three distinct heavens: 1. the heaven of the air (cælum aereum) where we see the birds and the clouds; 2. the heaven of the stars (cælum sidereum); and 3. the third or empyrean heaven (cælum empyreum) where God manifests Himself to the elect.

[3] Look upon the rainbow, and bless him that made it: it is very beautiful in its brightness. It encompasseth the heaven about with the circle of its glory, the hands of the most High have displayed it. Ecclus. xliii. 12-13.
[4] baldric: 1. A belt or girdle, usually of leather and richly ornamented, worn pendent from one shoulder across the breast and under the opposite arm, and used to support the wearer's sword; 2. The strap of a shield, by which it was hung round the neck. 3. figurative. The zodiac, viewed as a gem-studded belt. (Excerpts taken from OED)

5   This is why the Holy Fathers Give her praises and blessings a thousand times over. St Cyril was the great Patriarch of Alexandria and later Legate of the Holy See. He was her valiant defender and here is what he once said to the most august assembly during the Council of Ephesus:

All honour be to thee oh sweet and gentle Virgin, and once again: all honour be to thee! For through thy mediation the most adorable Trinity is now glorified across the world, Heaven is filled with happiness, the Angels rejoice, the demons are stripped of their power and scattered, man regains his first splendour and his ancient dignity, and the whole world relinquishes its subservience to false gods, returning to the loving recognition of its creator.

Some time previously, Saint Epiphanius[1] addressed her as follows:

Through thy mediation, the peace of Heaven came down on earth; through thee, men regained the beautiful and desirable qualities of being servants, friends and children of God; by means of thee, men became companions of the Angels since thou didst acquire for them the right of familiar and friendly interaction with them; through thee, an understanding of heavenly things was communicated to earth’s inhabitants; through thee, we have been reunited in the understanding and love we have for the most blessed Son that thou didst give unto the world, and by means of both thee and thy Son we have been reunited with the Eternal Father and with the Holy Spirit who is equal in all things to the Father and to the Son, with the result that we have been reunited to the most Holy and Undivided Trinity, to whom all honour and glory be for ever and ever. Amen.
