The Crown of Excellence : Chapter 12 : § 5.85-87

Chapter 12 : The Eleventh Star or Splendour of the Crown of Excellence of the Mother of God

Continuing our translation of the 1845 reprint of Fr François Poiré's Triple Crown of the Mother of God (1643 French edition).

Notre Dame des Grâces, Cotignac.(Poggi, 2020)
She has been and is still recognized and called blessed by all generations in the world

§ 5. She was recognized  and honoured by all Nations everywhere in the world

OUR LADY OF THE HILL, OUR LADY OF TOURS, OUR LADY OF BERLIN, OUR LADY OF THE CHAPEL, OUR LADY OF REGENSBERG, OUR LADY OF OETTINGEN, OUR LADY OF SALZBURG, OUR LADY OF ETTAL, OUR LADY OF SCHIER, OUR LADY OF ALLERSDORF, OUR LADY OF NEUKIRKEN & OUR LADY OF CELLE

85   The city and canton of Fribourg honours the Virgin in a particular way under four titles in different places, all of which see huge numbers of visitors. The first is Our Lady of the Hill, commonly known as Our Lady of Bourdillon, which is a fine chapel with a lazar-house about a quarter of a league from the town. All sorts of miracles have been reported there and the Virgin shows herself particularly solicitous for still-born babies. The second is Our Lady of Tours, built on the lands of heretics and at this particular location because Our Lady was seen there on a hawthorn bush. The third is Our Lady of Berlin, very well-known throughout the land, especially for those who have prayers to offer for headaches. The fourth is Our Lady of the Chapel which the heretics wished to remove from people’s memory, abandoning the faith of their ancestors. All their efforts were in vain, however, and served only to make the site more famous. The same may be said of other sites and cantons but I cannot give the details here.

86   The Duchy of Bavaria alone was preserved whole and entire amidst the general conflagration that left so many other Provinces desolate when the torch of heresy was tossed into this warlike nation. I have no difficulty in believing that the Queen of Heaven deliberately lent her support to them, prompted by the remarkable devotion always shown towards her by the Princes of this illustrious house, a devotion which they have demonstrated in several different ways. One such example is the beautiful Church in Regensberg which was consecrated[1] by St Rupert, Bishop of Salzburg and Apostle of Bavaria and founded by Duke Theodo after he had received Baptism from the hands of this same St Rupert. Another example is to be found in Oettingen, dedicated by the same Saint[2] after he had baptised Duke Udo. Yet another is the noble Monastery of Salzburg[3] where this Holy Apostle conferred the veil on Erentrude, his own sister, whose fragrant holiness was to spread throughout Germany. Another example is Ettal which was built through the munificence of the Emperor Ludwig IV and where this devoted Prince deposited the statue of the Holy Virgin that he had always carried with him during the course of his journey from Italy to Bavaria[4]. Consider too the case of Schier, concerning which I must recount a strange incident that happened when the Holy Virgin was given possession of the place[5].

All those who belonged to the house of the Counts of Schier, or who could lay any claim to the inheritance, by an act of their free will had ceded and conveyed to the Holy Virgin every right they might have to the  Château of Schier. Their wish was that it should be converted into a Church and Monastery dedicated to the service of the Virgin. There was one, however, called Arnold who did not agree to this and he said he was giving his share to the devil, in token of which he threw one of his gauntlets into the air signifying the right that he was ceding to the devil. A strange thing then happened, for scarcely had he uttered his words than demons snatched him and took him away in the sight of everyone, casting him into the waters of a nearby lake. Everyone learned from his example the price that is paid by anyone who mocks the MOTHER OF GOD.

In Bitburg it is truly wondrous to see the crowds flocking to Our Lady of Allersdorf where the frequent miracles reported serve on a daily basis to redouble devotion. I can say the same about Our Lady of Neukirken or New-Church which is also commonly known as Our Lady of the Precious Blood, a famous place of pilgrimage.

87   One league outside Graz in Styria there is a centre of devotion to the Holy Virgin where she is greatly honoured. On the way there you will notice fourteen columns, seven on each side of the road. They were placed there to represent the mysteries of the most sacred MOTHER OF GOD. This was the regular devotion of her most serene Highness Mary, wife of Archduke Charles and mother of Emperor Ferdinand presently reigning. This devout and peerless Princess would go there every Saturday along with the Princesses, her daughters. As soon as she came to the first column, they would all alight from the carriage, kneel down and sing the Litany of the Holy Virgin. They continued in this fashion, praying before each of the columns until they arrived at the Church. She also honoured Our Lady of Celle which is thirty leagues from Graz. Each time she went there, her heart would melt and tears would fill her eyes.
